MKEC is looking for a Substation Physical Design Engineer to join our Electric Utility team in our Overland Park office.

Responsibilities:

  • Electrical Engineering bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited program.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Kansas required.
  • Development of substation design drawings which may include:
    • General Arrangements & Layouts
    • Elevations & Section Details
    • Below Grade Conduit Plans & Schedules
    • Lightning Protection Plans/Analysis
    • Ground Grid Design & Grounding Details
    • Bill of Materials (BOM)
    • Control Building Layouts & Equipment
  • Develop bid documents and material specifications.
  • Review vendor submittals and provide analysis/feedback.
  • Efficiently & effectively communicate design requirements and collaborate with other disciplines of the company including structural, civil, survey, land development, etc. on a regular basis.
  • Generate reports on occasion.
  • Perform work in a timely manner to meet established milestones and/or deadlines.
  • Occasionally interface with clients to discuss design details and support construction tasks.
  • Serve as mentor to other engineers in the group.
  • Provide engineering expertise to develop design solutions and meet client needs in a timely manner

Requirements:

  • Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited program.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of work experience related to Substation Physical Design required.
  • Knowledgeable on applicable codes and industry standards including the National Electric Safety Code (NESC), Rural Utility Service (RUS) Bulletins & applicable IEEE Standards.
  • Proficient with various software packages including AutoCAD, Mathcad, and other design tools.
  • Experience with PLS-POLE/CADD, Osmose O-Calc Pro, ETAP, Milsoft WindMil/LightTable, SKM Power Tools, Substation Design Suite (SDS), etc. desirable.
  • Candidate must possess a mechanical aptitude with knowledge of power system design and operations.
  • Ability to use office administrative and collaboration software (MS Office, Teams, etc.).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Candidates must be self-motivated, highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and tasks while working in a team environment.
  • Occasional travel for site visits and client meetings may be required
